Writing Assignment #1

The First Image I chose was "Water Balloons" by Barnes Hill. This image has four black kids standing against a wall wearing very ragged clothes and they are all holding water balloons. This seems to be a humorous twist on the typical African child holding an assault rifle picture. Not only because of the childish tool of war, but the fact they are a group of friends all standing quite relaxed and with a sense of attitude, not an alone boy looking depressed. It's a picture that makes you feel a small sense of happiness, because even though these children are poor and probably going through hard times, they're still able to act as kids and play fun games and not fight the adult's battles.

The second picture I chose was "Untitled #213-04" by Richard Misrach. It has a lone child right at the shore's edge. She is all alone and the water is as still as the ocean can be. This reminds me of a painting called "Monk by the Sea" because it induces the feeling of being small in a large world. The view from above also gives the feeling of being God, looking down from the heavens, while the child is viewing all you created. Im not sure if your supposed to feel bad for the child for being alone, but it seems she is happy and is appreciating everything around her.
